Hamas leadership has called for an “immediate cessation” to hostilities unfolding in the Middle East just hours after 45th President and 47th President-Elect Donald Trump recaptured the presidency on Election Day.
Hamas spokesperson Basem Naim exclusively told Newsweek, “The election of Trump as the 47th president of the USA is a private matter for the Americans, but Palestinians look forward to an immediate cessation of the aggression against our people, especially in Gaza, and look for assistance in achieving their legitimate rights of freedom, independence, and the establishment of their independent self-sovereign state with Jerusalem as its capital.”
While the goals of Hamas may not align with President Trump’s goals for the Middle East, this call for peace is a positive development in an otherwise unending, bloody war in the region.
President Trump has strongly reiterated his position on supporting Israel throughout his 2024 campaign – an unwavering position he also demonstrated while in the White House for his first term.
Earlier this year, he said there can be “no acceptance” of anti-Semitism or anti-Semitic violence.
“I will not allow the Jewish state to be threatened with destruction, I will not allow a holocaust of the Jewish people, I will not allow a Jihad to be waged on America, or our allies, and I will support Israel’s right to win its war on terror,” he stated.
