President Donald Trump traveled to Powder Springs, Georgia on Monday, hot on the heels of his historic rally in Madison Square Garden Sunday night, where he attended a summit hosted by the National Faith Advisory Board.

The president reflected a bit on his upbringing in the Presbyterian Church – attendance that was encouraged, he said, by his Scottish mother, whom he described as “a believer.”

“My parents thought going to church was important,” he said.

He described his experience going to Sunday School, often on a Saturday, and told a story about the tender generosity of his late father, Fred Trump. “I remember we’d walk down the street and there’d be somebody holding a cup…he’d always put $100 dollars in that cup, always,” he said.

The president also acknowledged the critical role faith has played in American society.

“As [religion] goes down, our country goes down,” the president noted. “…Our country needs religion, it’s the glue that holds it together.”

President Trump also talked about his attendance at Marble Collegiate Church during his younger years – the church where he was also married – and even shared how his father would take him to Yankee Stadium back in the day to listen to Billy Graham speak.

“He was amazing,” Trump said.

In that vein, the president responded to a comment about the relief funds his campaign had raised for survivors in the North Carolina region, which has been recently devastated by Hurricane Helene. Those funds – $7 million – were given to Franklin Graham’s ministry – the son of the late Reverend Graham – Samaritan’s Purse, which has been instrumental in administering aid in that area.

“You couldn’t give it to a better person,” Trump remarked.
