California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed a bill effectively banning local government authorities from asking for voter ID as a prerequisite to voting in the state.
The bill, SB 1174, was authored by Democrat Sen. Dave Min in February 2024, and has been signed into law just weeks before the 2024 presidential election.
This bill comes after Huntington Beach voters passed a local ordinance earlier this year requiring citizens to show proof of identification at the polls. Newsom’s decision to ban voter ID in local elections is an attempt to override such ordinances.
In California, voters are not required to show proof of identification at the polls.
It is likely that Huntington Beach may legally challenge this new law, which attempts to supersede local voters’ authority over their own election systems.
Interestingly, California is one of the states most broadly affected by the woes of illegal immigration, thanks to its open border and its status as a “sanctuary state,” which means the state government has made the region a friendly place for illegal aliens to live and work.
President Trump has suggested that the millions of illegal migrants who have flooded into the United States during the Biden-Harris administration are being registered to vote with the aim of diluting the legitimate electorate.
Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, R-La., seems to share this sentiment.
Via USA Today, the Speaker stated during a September press conference, “We are in an era of razor-thin election margins. If you have a few thousand illegals participate in an election in the wrong place, you can change the makeup of Congress, and you can affect the presidential election.”
California’s new law begs a critical question: why ban identification at the polls? Identification must be shown upon the purchase of alcohol, firearms, at the doctor’s office, and upon boarding a plane. And yet it can’t be required to vote?
California Rep. Kevin Kiley (R) noted in early September, “This comes just two years after many Californians were required to present both an ID and personal medical documents to get a cup of coffee at Starbucks.”
