President Donald Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in New York on Friday morning after the European leader requested a meeting with the 45th president.
On Thursday, President Trump posted a text message from the deputy ambassador of Ukraine requesting the meeting, who wrote on Zelenskyy’s behalf, “I believe it’s important for us to have a personal contact and to understand each other 100%.”
President Trump has often said that he wants the war between Ukraine and Russia to end and has promised that as the prospective Commander-in-Chief once again that he would prevent World War III.
“Before I even arrive at the Oval Office, shortly after WE win the presidency…I will have the horrible war between Russia and Ukraine totally settled…I will prevent World War III,” he vowed in April.
“We’re going to have a discussion and see what we can come up with,” Trump told the media Friday.
President Trump also offered comments to Fox News on the meeting with Zelenskyy. “I think [Zelenskyy] said it best – this is a war that should have never happened…and it wouldn’t have happened, it’s a shame,” he said.
“We’re going to solve it – it’s a complicated puzzle, a very complicated puzzle…too many people dead,” President Trump added.
Zelenskyy’s meeting with President Trump is a big moment. It seems to signal a shift whereby he has acknowledged that he may very well be dealing soon with a Trump administration.
The president’s meeting with the Ukraine leader was a stark contrast to Zelenskyy’s politically-charged visit to Pennsylvania this month, where he visited an ammunition factory and signed artillery shells – a move that many saw as grossly disrespectful.
Zelenskyy was also flown into Pennsylvania onboard an Air Force C-17, according to The Hill. And, even more controversially, Zelenskyy recently inserted himself into the presidential election in the United States by stating that Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance, Trump’s running mate, was “too radical.”
On Friday, President Trump told Zelenskyy where to sit during their meeting.
