Early voting in the United States has begun, and with just 49 days to go until Election Day, banking early votes will be a critical part of the campaign strategies of both Democrats and Republicans.
Every state’s voting schedule is different when it comes to early voting. Some states, like Alabama, do not allow it. Other states encourage it.
On Tuesday, early voting kicked off in the battleground state of Pennsylvania.
According to the NCSL, only 10 states will start sending out ballots to voters more than 45 days before the election:
- Delaware,
- Arkansas,
- Kentucky,
- Minnesota,
- North Carolina,
- Pennsylvania,
- South Dakota,
- Tennessee,
- West Virginia,
- Wisconsin.
Other states that will mail ballots to voters at the 45-day mark are:
- Alabama, Indiana, Idaho, Louisiana, Michigan, Oklahoma, New Jersey, Texas, Rhode Island, Virginia, and Wyoming.
Eight states in the union automatically mail all registered voters their ballots. These states are: Utah, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington.
Since Covid, the expansion of mail-in ballots have changed the name of the political game. According to data from The Center for Election Innovation & Research, almost 97 percent of voting-age citizens in the U.S. “live in states that will offer at least one option to vote before election day in the 2024 election.”
“We urge all Republicans to go vote early, by mail, on Election Day, or whichever method works best for them,” said RNC spokesperson Claire Zunk earlier this year in a statement to Reuters.
