Without Freedom of Thought, there can be no such Thing as Wisdom; and no such Thing as publick Liberty, without Freedom of Speech; which is the Right of every Man, as far as by it he does not hurt or countroul the Right of another: And this is the only Check it ought to suffer, and the only Bounds it ought to know.
This sacred Privilege is so essential to free Governments, that the Security of Property, and the Freedom of Speech always go together; and in those wretched Countries where a Man cannot call his Tongue his own, he can scarce call any Thing else his own.
This passage, penned by Benjamin Franklin in The New England Courant, is an excellent launching point for Write Revolution News.
Franklin, who wrote many such passages under the penname Silence Dogood, demonstrated in the early days of America how integral the written word could be during times of tempestuous political tides.
The passage above heavily quotes an article from the London Journal (1720). It also demonstrates Franklin’s dedication to protecting the ideals of free speech and a free press even after his elder brother, James, was jailed for supposedly offending government officials with previous newspaper writings, according to the Massachusetts Historical Society.
Benjamin kept the newspaper running while his brother was imprisoned for exercising his free speech – and keep in mind that this was decades before the Revolutionary War would erupt.
These types of small, peaceful, and powerful rebellions in the form of the written word remind us just how important good ideas can be.
America itself was built on an idea – an inspiration, a creative thought, and the independent will of its people, who braved jagged and unforgiving shorelines and wildernesses to carve out settlements and tame the land.
Without the brilliant writing of Thomas Paine in his pamphlet, Common Sense, or without the stirring oration of Patrick Henry when he declared, “Give me liberty, or give me death,” American exceptionalism would have never blossomed as it did.
Words have power. They are immortal. They shape minds and make arguments and turn political tides. The words we choose and the stories we tell and the arguments we make have a profound impact on our culture and our world, for better or for worse.
Bad ideas, shared with deceptive words, wound nations and harm its people. Good ideas, told with words rooted in truth, uplift a nation and bring prosperity.
“The difference between the right word and the almost right word is the difference between lightning and a lightning bug,” said acclaimed American writer Mark Twain.
When bad ideas and destructive ideologies arise in society, it becomes the duty of the informed American citizen to offer an antidote to such untruths, and to wield the power of the pen, when applicable, to provide a counterpoint to these attacks.
“The liberties of our country, the freedom of our civil constitution, are worth defending against all hazards: And it is our duty to defend them against all attacks,” said Founding Father Samuel Adams.
This moral duty to protect our country is the basis upon which Write Revolution News is founded. It is dedicated to providing that integral counterpoint to mainstream narratives, counterfeit commentaries, and anti-American ideologies that may threaten the fabric of freedom.
The pen, as some have said, is mightier than the sword.
Like those Founding Fathers who came before us, wielding their pens with power and stunning intellectualism, so must we, as modern patriots, push back against the bleak tide of communism rising within America.
