President Donald Trump announced on Thursday for the first time that under a prospective second term, insurance providers in the United States would have to pay for all costs associated with in vitro fertilization, or the government would have to pick up the tab.
The president’s announcement was made during remarks focused on the economy in Porterville, Michigan.
“We will pay for – or your insurance will be mandated to pay for – all costs associated with IVF treatment,” he said.
He added, “Because we want MORE BABIES, to put it very nicely.”
Trump described the new policy announcement as “pro-family” and pointed out how expensive IVF treatments are.
For reference, one round of IVF treatment costs around $20,000 in California, and typically, these treatments come straight out of couples’ pockets.
Insurance is not required to cover fertility treatment like IVF, which forces couples who are facing infertility to either endure financial hardship to access fertility treatment or opt to refrain from them, which means they cannot achieve their dream of having a family.
“I’ve been in favor of IVF right from the beginning,” Trump said.
