Special Editorial by Paul Leslie |
The cancellation of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on CBS let loose a wave of outrage from the left. Some see it as a political betrayal from legacy media and others as a conspiracy. But leftist hysteria is on-brand. Their grievances are endless, and Colbert’s show ending is just the latest flare-up.
The left’s constant grievances
For the group of people we call the left, every day brings a new grievance. There’s always a resentment du jour.
Always.
Look on the platforms like X and you’ll see that the latest upset is CBS announcing the end of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Colbert was never a good late-night host, but the major network isn’t just ending his tenure — they’re ending “The Late Show” franchise altogether.
Never mind that the snooze fest has been losing money, many on the left are insisting that CBS, a clearly left-leaning network is only canning Colbert because they want to do President Trump’s bidding. Are you laughing yet?
Not long after Colbert took the reins from Letterman, I decided to give him a shot. Throughout the entire episode, I didn’t so much as chuckle. I realized that it wasn’t my cup of tea.
Whenever I would see a clip of the second and apparently last Late Show host, I always asked the question: why did they give this guy a late-night time slot? I was hoping for someone like Norm Macdonald.
It became apparent as Colbert continued with the show that it seemed like federal propaganda. When you viewed the show through that lens, everything became clearer, and you could occasionally smirk when you weren’t cringing.
We have options with endless podcasts and livestreams. Of course there’s also the new King of Late Night: Greg Gutfeld. Writer and editor Walter Kirn heckled: “Looks like Gutfeld has taken a scalp.”
As Colbert’s relevancy dwindled, he became increasingly pathetic. He ended up as nothing more than a cheerleader for resentment and Trump derangement syndrome. Finally CBS made the correct decision to put the show out of its misery.
The left wept.
Outrage from the left
Many leftist commentators suggested that their perpetually offended community should boycott CBS! The only late-night host worst than smug Colbert is the truly intolerable Jimmy Kimmel. Needless to say, Kimmel is outraged and needed to use the f-word to express his uninformed opinion.
See, now that’s funny! If Kimmel is angry, we can be certain the good ol’ USA is moving in the right direction.
But, if there’s one thing you can always put your money on, it’s that the left is furious. This doesn’t change because their movement needs misery to survive. It’s both a product and the fuel that keeps everything going.
Patriotic events spark anger
July is coming to an end, but do you remember June? President Trump delivered in-person remarks on June 10th at Fort Bragg, North Carolina in front of soldiers and everyday Americans alike. As one of the civilians in the audience, I watched as countless men and women applauded and cheered. For the left, the occasion was another opportunity to seethe. There was no attempt to focus on areas of agreement.
Don’t worry, there was plenty more vitriol to come.
June 14, 2025 was the date of the military parade held to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States Army. Now, there’s an occasion where the fine people on both side can come together, right? “I love a parade,” … so a famous old American song begins.
Not on their watch. You may see a unifying, patriotic event. The activist class and legacy media only got more depressed.
Some of you are hardly surprised.
The left thrives on misery
I’m here to tell you that the left isn’t really happy unless they’re unhappy. The Democrats could sum up 2025 as “it was the worst of times, it was the very worst of times.”
I see it differently. The left doesn’t prosper on gratitude or success like you or I. Their ideology is a gospel of shared misery.
From 2021 to 2024, it was hard to buy their bogus claims of oppression. With Biden in the White House as Mannequin-in-Chief, and whoever the heck was running things, the media dutifully told everyone how things had never been better.
Nonetheless the wokesters bellowed: “We’re the rebellion!”
“Resist!” has always been a Democrat activist buzzword.
Resist what? The left controls the legacy media, Big Tech, the entertainment industry, the university and educational system, and has even dug its tentacles into almost all big businesses.
Those on the left had little to protest with a straight face. Their symbolic adversary was the 45th President, who was facing nonstop law fare, and even violence. It’s hard to get worked up about much when you’re actually the oppressor and in power.
The return to victimhood
But, something changed on November 5, 2024. The American people decided enough was enough. It was time to give the main occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue a notice to vacate.
The left was able to return to their comfort zone: imagined victimhood. There are healthy portions of villainization of normalcy, patriotism, Christianity and morality in that recipe. This bitterness complements a constant need to endlessly complain about how the majority of Americans are just stupid, uneducated, and to use a tired accusation: racist.
Sigh…
Does this almost seem like the thinking of a mentally ill person? You’re onto something.
I recommend the book Liberalism is a Mental Disorder by Michael Savage. The title kind of says it all. It’s one of the best books ever written to get an understanding of what is the root of the left’s collective state.
Savage wrote: “As much as the left fashions themselves as being progressive, they’re not. In reality, today’s leftist movement is made in much the same way as sausage — it’s a blend of fascist, communist, and socialist ideologies from twentieth century Europe, with a pinch of Nazism, all ground together, yet retaining the flavor of all its various parts.”
If you want to see how the sausage is made, get Savage’s book.
My encounter with leftist protests
You want to see the sausage in the real world? Go check out any leftist protest.
Last year I went to Savannah, Georgia to see one of Trump’s speeches at the Johnny Mercer theatre. Walking through the city, clad in a long sleeve button up shirt and khakis and no clothing to signal allegiance to any ideology, I became surrounded by a small mob of left-wing activists.
From deathly thin young men in black skinny jeans who moved in closer, to elderly ladies with frightening eyes who mostly kept a distance, it was so clear that these were people fueled by hate. They chanted repeatedly, at me, a stranger: “Racist!” “Fascist!” and “Nazi!”
For a moment I wondered how anyone could give into such hysteria, and it occurred to me that the only way you can stay in such a state is if you’re getting something out of it.
Chaos isn’t a symptom of their worldview, it’s kind of the point. And then I laughed.
Having something to feel angry about is like comfort food to the left. They feel like revolutionaries. Holding up signs that say “No Kings!” Makes them feel united with other mental disorder sufferers.
It’s also something sure to keep them occupied for al long time. America has never had a King or Queen in the 249 years since the Declaration of Independence was signed. As long as their continues to be no king, the leftists will feel like they’re accomplishing a lot.
It gives them something to do until the next thing offends them.
As long as there are men’s and women’s restrooms, Christmas, July 4th, and the Constitution, they’ll always have plenty to be upset about.
The left wouldn’t have it any other way.
