Newly elected Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R) won his position on Wednesday on the second round of secret ballot voting that quickly eliminated Florida Sen. Rick Scott (R) from the running, and despite some chagrin online among conservatives, he has promised to prioritize President Trump’s agenda.
“Just got off the phone with @realDonaldTrump. Senate Republicans are excited and ready to get to work implementing President Trump’s agenda on behalf of the American people,” Thune said on X.
Sen. Thune was not the first choice for Senate Majority Leader among many Americans like Turning Point USA President Charlie Kirk, who vocally advocated for Sen. Scott to take the position.
In light of Thune’s promise on Wednesday to work with President Trump and enact his agenda, Kirk wrote, “Thune is now on the record. If Trump doesn’t have a full cabinet by mid-February we are going to have a problem. Get it done, Senator Thune.”
President Trump stayed diplomatically quiet about the Senate election process heading into it. The president is currently very busy building his second incoming administration cabinet.
On Wednesday, President Trump extended a message of congratulations to Thune and seemed optimistic about working with him.
The president wrote:
“Congratulations to Senator John Thune, the Newly Elected Senate Majority Leader. He moves quickly, and will do an outstanding job. I look forward to working with him, and Senators John Barrasso (Senate Majority Whip), Tom Cotton (Senate Republican Conference Chairman), Shelley Moore Capito (Senate Republican Policy Committee Chairman), James Lankford (Republican Conference Vice Chairman), and Tim Scott (National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman) to, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
