Kamala Harris is scheduled to debate Donald Trump on ABC on September 10.
If Harris does not try to wiggle out of the debate, Trump should utilize the same approach he used to dismantle Joe Biden during their recent debate. Specifically, Trump should remain focused, calm, and assertive, hammer home his policies, and remind Americans why Harris’s radical record and policies are dangerous for America.
Harris’s approach to the debate will likely be quite simple. Given her inability to discuss any specific policies, and her unwillingness to defend her poor record, Harris will likely try to get under Trump’s skin, hoping to elicit a response she can use against him.
Harris could possibly refer to Trump’s recent conviction in the absurd Manhattan trial or the various and equally absurd civil judgments against him. She is also likely to refer to the various criminal cases brought by a weaponized Department of Justice and/or left-wing prosecutors solely for political purposes.
If Harris resorts to juvenile attacks of this nature, Trump’s best approach is to simply remind Americans that the cases are all political in nature, which most Americans know, and to focus on policy.
After all, Harris has tried to avoid a substantive discussion about policy since the day she was inserted as the nominee. She has failed to give a single press conference and has allowed her handlers to speak on her behalf. She also sat for a prerecorded interview on CNN where she answered seemingly scripted questions and needed Tim Walz by her side.
During the debate, Trump should not allow Harris to bait him into attacking her personally. If he does so, he will give Harris the only lifeline that is available to her, which is a talking point that Trump “bullied” her.
Rather, Trump should calmly and confidently explain his policies and agenda for America, including those relating to the economy, inflation, taxes, immigration, energy, the border, foreign policy, the military, protecting women’s sports, and other important issues. Along those same lines, Trump should highlight Harris’s dangerous, far left, and radical record (as I previously discussed here), and explain how it will destroy America.
Unlike Harris, Trump can point to his successful record and many accomplishments as president to support his current agenda and vision for America. Harris, on the other hand, does not have this luxury. To stay relevant and to keep the debate even remotely close, Harris will need to create a deflection that will turn attention away from her radical record and her refusal to discuss her dangerous agenda.
Trump should not give her this opportunity. He should not engage in personal insults, refrain from personal attacks, and do his best not to provide Harris with any “talking points” that are avoidable.
Rather, he should clearly lay out his agenda and explain how it will help Americans. If he does this, he will also force Harris to do what she has intentionally avoided, which is to defend her record, lay out her specific agenda and policies, and explain why they are better for Americans.
Trump campaign senior adviser Jason Miller recently told Fox News:
“They don’t want to put Kamala Harris out there, and you want to know why? Because she’s going to have to answer for every bit of this last three and a half years. You can’t talk about turning the page when you’re the one who broke the economy, broke the border, broke the world, but that’s on Kamala, and she’s going to have to account for that when she’s on the debate stage.”
Miller makes a legitimate argument. If Trump follows the game plan, and if Harris does not bow out of the debate, she will likely suffer a “Biden-like” defeat on September 10.
